Our verdict (for people who scrolled straight here)
✨ Our verdict: Riedel Mamba Decanter. Part decanter, part sculpture. Buy it for the theatre; keep it for the pour Check today's price →
Most decanters are bottles with ambition. The Riedel Mamba is something else entirely: a single ribbon of hand-blown crystal folded into a double curve, like a snake mid-yoga. It is the only piece of glassware we own that guests photograph before the food arrives.
But we do not review ornaments here. The question is whether it earns its keep as a decanter, so we ran it through the same dinners, the same young Shiraz and the same washing-up sink as everything else in our decanter roundup. Short answer: yes, with two honest caveats.

The showpiece that actually works
Riedel Mamba Handmade Crystal Decanter
Wine poured into the Mamba travels the full length of both curves before it settles, picking up air the whole way. That is not a gimmick; it is the same principle as a wide-based decanter, stretched into a shape worth looking at. Around 1.5 litres of capacity means a standard bottle fits with swirling room to spare.
- Hand-blown crystal, so no two are quite identical
- The S-bend doubles the wine's journey and its air time
- Pours in a smooth, controlled stream once you get the knack
- Undisputed centrepiece energy
- Premium price for premium glass
- The curves make cleaning a small ritual

What it is like to live with
Pouring takes one evening of practice. The first attempt feels like handling a trombone full of Shiraz; by the second bottle it becomes a party trick. The crystal is thinner than it looks but never felt fragile in months of use, and it pours clean without dribbling down the outside, which is more than we can say for several sensible-looking decanters we have tested.
The honest downside is cleaning. Those beautiful bends collect rinse water, so you will want decanter beads or a long brush, plus proper drying. Our guide on how to dry a wine decanter was practically written for this thing.
Who should buy it, and who should not
Buy the Mamba if you love wine and you love objects, if you host often, or if you are shopping for someone who already owns every sensible wine gadget. It is the anniversary gift, the milestone-birthday gift, the “we survived the renovation” gift.
Skip it if you just want maximum aeration per dollar. The classic Riedel Cabernet decanter does the breathing work for far less money, and if speed is the goal, a good aerator gets you there in seconds. The Mamba is for when the pour itself is part of the evening.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Riedel Mamba dishwasher safe?
No, and please do not try. Hand-blown crystal and dishwasher racks are natural enemies. Warm water, a gentle swirl, decanter beads for stubborn residue, and thorough drying will keep it perfect for decades.
Does the shape actually improve aeration?
Yes. The wine travels through both curves on its way in, which stretches its contact with air compared with a straight pour. It will not out-aerate a wide-based decanter plus an hour of patience, but it holds its own while looking ten times better.
How much wine does the Mamba hold?
Around 1.5 litres, so a standard 750ml bottle fits comfortably with plenty of room for the wine to spread out and breathe.
Is it too fragile for regular use?
Treat it with normal care and it is sturdier than it looks. The risky moments are washing and drying, not pouring. Give it a safe shelf spot and it will outlast the trends around it.
